In the first week of March, the WELCOMIN team was in Berlin to carry out fieldwork concerning the second scenario of the research. Named the Fluid City, this scenario works from a perspective of 20 years from now. In this scenario, we account that the population of Brussels would have risen, and that vacancy has diminished. This creates an environment where there is pressure on the existing urban structures to accommodate newcomers and citizens.
Through our fieldwork, we were able to meet and visit several WELCOMINs in the city of Berlin. In our preliminary research, we identified 15 mixed-use infrastructures that we visited over the course of four days. During those visits, we tried to meet with local actors, lead interviews, and learn from their ways of organising, how they respond to the different needs of the city, as well as their financial systems.
